Fibre Orientation and Fibre Growth Dynamics of Red and Pink Muscle Fibers in the Soleus Muscle of Developing Chick
Authors(2) :-Mayalata Dimpal, Rahul Kundu The present communication reports the fiber orientation in relation to functional activity and the fiber growth dynamics in relation to the somatic growth rate in the Soleus muscle of developing male white Leghorn chick. Results revealed the presence of two basic fiber types i.e., red and pink, while, white fibres were not seen. Red fibers were found to be concentrated more in the deeper regions near the bone, while, the pink fibers were found to be scattered randomly within the muscle mass. Results also exhibited that the growth of all three fiber types occurred by hypertrophy almost exclusively. True hyperplasia did not manifest in any age group, as it was possibly ceased in the late embryonic stage. Splitting of large fibers into smaller fibers was observed in some cases of pink fibers. Experimental results showed that all fiber types grew by hypertrophy almost entirely regardless of their position and functional activities. The observed fibre growth dynamics was found to be related to the somatic growth rate of the chick.
